The Ministerial Alliance of Springfield and Vicinity and P.R.A.Y. (Praying for Revival All Year Committee) have planned a series of Solemn Assemblies prayer events to coincide with the city's commemoration of the race riots of 1908.

We will in no way dramatize 1908 and the dark divisive events that occurred then, but will emphasize the progress that has been made since that time and the reconciliation that must take place among God's people!" said Rev. Dr. W.G. Robinson-McNeese, president of the Alliance. "The clergy needs to be out front on this commemoration."

The initiative was unveiled at the 2007 Community Thanksgiving Service held in November at the First Christian Church. The Community Thanksgiving Service in 2008 will be one of special thanks and celebration.

Eight Solemn Assemblies will be held in downtown churches near eight markers that now commemorate certain events that took place during the 1908 race riots. Each assembly will begin with prayer meditation and conclude by walking to a nearby marker for closing prayer.
